Nandi

The Bull

Who is Nandi?  As all of us known, he is vehicle (vahana) of Shiva and is normally found in all Shiva temples ,he symbolize purity and justice.Nandi is also placed at the entrance of Shiva temples in a sitting or standing posture to be known as Gate keeper of Shiva's abode. In Sanskrit, the common bull is  "vrisha", meaning : righteousness or Dharma. So it is important to seek the blessings of Nandi before one proceeds  to worship Lord Shiva its like asking permission to visit the Master .

Originally, under the name of Nandikeshvara, Nandi seems to have existed in human form as a sage (Rishi) who acted as Shiva’s door keeper before achieving divine status. The reason for the association may have stemmed from Shiva’s relationship with Rudra who was sometimes referred to as the bull. This probably has roots in the vast mythology and the symbolism surrounding bulls that are found in ancient cultures. Another fact i learned that It was Nandi who cursed Ravana (the demon King of Lanka) that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey (Vanara). And later Hanuman burnt Lanka when he went in search of Sita in Ramayana Epic.

I always wondered that what do people tell or read mantra to nandi's ear? Also that they touch nandi's ears with fingers in a certain way...soon after read few articles about Nandi i found out that it is believed that whispering our prayers in the nandi's ears will reach shiva and some people do close one ear and whisper into the other, as they don't want the wish to leave through the other ear. Another interesting i learn was Seeing the shivalingam in the sanctum from in between the ears of Nandi is also said to be a form of worship as it is believed that Shiva is looking at the world from between those ears and head.

Note:-
We always have to ensure that not stand in between nandi and shiva while praying. There is alot of concept and rule which i need to learn more on how to worship lord Shiva at his temple.

Om Thathpurushaya Vidhmahe
Chakrathundaya Dheemahe
Thanno Nandi Prachodayath.
