Tamil New Year

April 13 2008-Sunday,Puthandu,more frequently known as the Tamil New Year are celebrated on the same day respectively in the All over the world by Hindu's. They generally fall on 13 April or 14 April. Tamil New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu Solar Calendar ,every year in the month of Chithrai (the first month of the Hindu solar calendar).Greetings of “Puthandu Vazthukal”, (Happy New Year), are exchanged with fervour on this day, which is supposedly the day when Lord Brahma (The Creator of the world, according to Hindu mythology) started creation. This year Puthandu falls on 13th april.I was at Kotamalai Sri Ganesha temple near Puduraya station on that day,i was invited by on of my friend to the temple as the temple is known as highly popular temple in KL.I were there since 6.30 in the morning. There were around 200 prayer who visit the temple around that time & i noticed the temple also drew guests from other races such chinese. The ceremony start's by Lord Ganesha was cleaned with milk, yellow kunkum, vibuthi, honey& coconut water by Iyer's.Then Poojas started performed to Lord Ganesha, the elephant god in the Hindu religion.. he is also the God of education, knowledge and wisdom, literature, and the fine arts. i wittness as some prayer lifted their hands in prayer & some handful of women knelt, heads down, in front Lord Ganesha as pooja goes on.

At around 8.30am the pooja ends. This immersion is accompanied by bell rings, devotional songs by prayer. Then i done an extended prayer at the temple, and I fully focus on the Lord Ganesha deity then, circle it around the the deity for 3 times. Then receive prasadam. The prasadam (thiruneeru) is then offered to each prayer who was there, it was placed it in ring fingers, and apply ot across the forehead. Then Special archanai (pooja) by individuals was also be done, but each have to buy Coupon at the Temple office and give it to the Iyer.(not sure about the price)After that the Iyer will give you the prasadam (coconut ) which can be taken home.

Its nearly 9am.Having participated in the temple pooja and i was told before, that u shouldn't return home or leave the temple immediately,So i sit at a suitable place in sight of the temple and spend some time there. It was very intresting to watch the the full pooja for the 1st in my life. It's a very auspicious occasion, that my new year begins at temple as It is the home of God Lord Ganesha.I was very happy that day. After a while there ..i leave the temple for home, with a calm frame of mind.
