207th Merseyside derby

The Merseyside Derby is the name of the football match played between the Everton and Liverpool football clubs, the two most successful clubs from the city of Liverpool in the Merseyside area of England.

In a match that has much more at stake than just three points, passion and desperation tend to play a major part. And in footballing terms, there aren’t many encounters that match the level of dignity that is at stake in this Merseyside clash. With all of the competition between the two clubs, it would be expected classy match tonight.

Liverpool and Everton are not just two football clubs that are close to each other geographically, they are also interlinked with each other in many other ways. Most families on Merseyside are split in their support between the two clubs, which greatly adds to the competitive spirit, and if anything allows for the rivalry to reach levels that are very high, but not usually dangerously so.

Liverpool have already beaten the Blues this season after Dirk Kuyt's double from the penalty-spot clinched a 2-1 success and they will be aiming to send Moyes and his men home empty-handed on this occasion, to secure not only the double over their nearest rivals, but also a psychological edge in the race for fourth.

Liverpool do enter the game though as favourites with betting odds expecting nothing more than home win. Everton have failed to leave Anfield with all three points in nearly eight years and have not celebrated double League victories against their fellow Merseysiders since the 84/85 season.
